March 7, 1:40pm:
“Loving the calm that has xterised this election week! We keep waiting for tallying and announcement to close so we can know for sure who will be our 4th president. That could happen by tonight. God bless Kenya!”

March 8, 9.30pm:
“Tense atmosphere as elections near a close..and we get the new president elect. While i observe that we’re birthing a new Kenya, the question is are we new Kenyans? Our
perceptions, attitudes, priorities, values? I pray we BE.”

“Voice of a Citizen” March 6

A diary about the Kenyan Presidential Elections:
“Time 4:50pm. Day 2 after poll. Took a sleeping break to get some rest and clear nolstagic memories of march 4th, though it is hard because I’ve never been more proud to vote! There are celebrations across the nation already for the elected leaders and those who lost are accepting defeat, some amid difficulty. Most businesses remain closed and people are being urged to resume work, school etc. I must admit we’ve had a great run this time. The results reflect the people’s voice, the atmosphere is still calm and we’re seing a great deal of humility and patriotism. Those elected say its not them, but their constituents who have won and say they will reach out to even those they defeated and try work together. However, presidential results are streaming in rather slow since yesterday and its causing a bit of anxiety. But, the IEBC maintains we should wait patiently and they are allowed by law to tally and announce withing 7days after polls. We also had the presidential Diaspora (East Africa) vote come through today, which is new!”

“Still awake looking at the results streaming in though sleepy. Most homes are still lit, silent and I can only guess we’re all going to be up until morning! I love the harmony, the transparency we’re seeing with vote counts and how patient evrybody is tonight. Every time i go to vote i get a different experience…we mingle, interact & even bond on the one reason we’re there: Governance. It never matters where you’re from, what you do…we’re all equal. And so i pledge to equally respect & accept the results”.

“Voter turnout at 86% countrywide. I queued for a cool 5hrs just waiting for my turn! Kenyans are so proud of this day, mostly because its time to bring a new wave of change to our government. People are indoors watching TV and keeping wth the count of votes by IEBC. It has been a very peaceful day..and a very exhausting one! Lets now wait for the results. *fingers crossed*”

“We been to Kayole, Soweto, Dandora, Donholm, and South B so far. The film screenings have had a total turnout of 230. Got feedback that the film that was very educative and the Ghana people were admirable in how they dealt wth those elections. They commented on how we should have been there before, weeks before tomorrow’s election because information about the transition process wasnt well done in terms of civic education. Today was characterized by a normal calm morning…people talking about tomorrow. The media is emphasizing on peace and togetherness. Talks are also revolving on aspirants manifesto content and what they have done. Security is beefed up everywhere. We’re waiting to wake up before dawn and go vote!”

Introducing updates from Kenya – “Voice of a Citizen” – March 1

Our Kenya correspondent, Jacque, will be giving us updates on the ground about the 2013 Kenyan Elections. Welcome to the “Voice of a Citizen” series!

“Its unbelievable guys are so excited yet anxious, myself included. I can even hear some noise outside – a campaign team is doing last minute rounds. Every aspirant is telling people to come out Monday to vote. Our president earlier today made a public press statement to urge people to vote & be peaceful. Look out for BBC Focus on Africa…they’re covering a lot. Prayers in churches are all about peace & unity. We can only wait to see how the results will be handled and the transition. But we have never been hungrier for a generational change in government! Most old folks will pack their bags, along with those who have no proven track record serving the people.  Now off to bed!”
